"Wow! That's A Shitty Ad!" - Staples Commercial Voted Worst Ad In America For 2010 → consumerist.com

Being a copywriter, I often watch commercials and wonder “How’d that get corporate approval?”  It just so happens that the “Wow, that’s a low price!” Staples commercial was one of them.  I think their advertising/branding VP must’ve been sleeping with his head on the—get ready for it—“easy” button!  (Yeah, I went there.)

Anyways, this, my friends, is justice.

p.s. - I’d also like to nominate the Wanchai Ferry Panda for creepiest spokesperson.  That voice…

Time Management - The Pomodoro Technique → en.wikipedia.org

I’ve been using timers for a little while now to help me focus, breaking things into 20-minute increments after reading about it on a self-improvement blog.  Today, someone brought the Pomodoro Technique to my attention, which adds a little structure to my timer/to-do-list routine.  Click on the title to read about it on Wikipedia.

“We’re bastards to the world and they’re bastards to us,” one Hells Angel told Newsweek in 1965. “When you walk into a place where people can see you, you want to look as repulsive and repugnant as possible. We are complete social outcasts — outsiders against society.” —LIFE Magazine

The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity. - Yeats → en.wikipedia.org

Have a high opinion of your skills?  Think you’ve got the world by the twig n’ berries?  Then perhaps you should read on about the Dunning-Kruger Effect, because you might be totally incompetent and stupid…

Pity the Poor Couple Who Make $450,000 Per Year (Yet Another Failure of Our 'Elite' Educational System) → scienceblogs.com

This is Mike the Mad Biologist’s response to a poor, down-trodden law professor who recently complained about struggling to survive on ~$400K/yr, and further claims that the newest tax proposal will sink him and the small economy of gardeners, maids and private schools that he and his MD wife selflessly support.  No, you can’t make this up.  Yes, the article’s hilarious.

10th Anniversary of Laird Hamilton's Millennium Wave → surfline.com

Tow-surfing’s concierto: The name’s as corny as it gets, but the “Millennium Wave” introduced the world to a new standard for surfing the previously unsurfable.  (Click through for photos.)

A Real, Actual Lawyer Debunks Copyright Myths → pixiq.com

“If I place my work in a sealed envelope and mail it to myself, I’m protected.

*BIG NOPE. That just proves you mailed yourself something. A judge will laugh that out of court. If a lawyer recommends you do that, you probably need to find a new lawyer. If you’re going to mail anything, mail in your registration.”

Self-Control Is Way More Important Than IQ…(and why doubting it gets you in trouble)  → madepublishing.com

“I know a guy who constantly talks about wanting to start his own business. He’d like to build it around his very own iPhone app. He’s a talented Flash designer who resolved several years ago to teach himself how to develop apps. About 6 months ago, he bought himself a book on how to do that. He hasn’t cracked it open yet. Instead, he spends his weeknights watching Netflix.”  (via @superamit)
